War Ballads

A Fictionary battle between the Tlaxcalan archers trying to conquer the ragged Tlatelocan tribe.
The following war ballad shows how the Tlatelocans aided by nature, resisted the mighty Tlaxcalans archers and held on that day.
         I
Across the moonlit sky, in the shadow’s bliss,
Deep inside the Tlatelocan vale, unfolds our tale;
A victory sought, a battle to be won,
Old Ag’mor clamored, the enemy dispersing,
In unison the troupe bellowed the war-cry resounding.
                                II
The Tlaxcalans, armed with bows, took to light,
Alongst the trees did they span, all over the Yucatan;
Arrows flew like wild fire, shrieks of pain,
Skilled and astute, rarely amiss did they shoot,
The vantage point redeeming, like fire, like chute.
                                III
Tlatelocans down and out, their jaguars battered and rugged,
Seeing no hope, were awfully grope;
The night grew fierce, the clouds resplendent,
The Tlaxcalans took cover, whilst the rains showered,
Amidst the drench, the eagles hovered.
                                IV
An unlikely hero, in young Angora did emerge,
Swift of flight, and gallant in fight;
Dashed through the ranks, unfettered and puissant,
The jaguar warriors reassembled, instilling courage,
Angora, like the eagle, tore across the enemy’s visage.
         V
The clash dreared on, either side unrelenting,
Angora led charge, the jaguars at large;
The bowmen took haste in trepidation,
The Tlaxcalans withdrew, an impasse reached,
For time immemorial thus remains Angora’s name preached.
